Keeping things Traditional
Oakbound Studio
Producing The Woods games and miniatures is a real micro-industry!
Design and sculpting takes place in a small attic studio. Metal miniatures are spin-cast out in the shed using a 1950s Romanoff centrifugal casting machine. The machine (nicknamed 'Beastie') itself has a pedigree in miniatures production, previously belonging to Hysterical Games and Macrocosm Miniatures before coming to live at Oakbound. It has spun such legends as the Hinchliffe fantasy range, Panzerfauste and the earliest Burrows and Badgers miniatures.
Moulds for our limited resin miniatures are made at the studio, but the special vulcanised rubber moulds for metal casting require more specialist equipment. These are produced twenty miles up the road in Tewkesbury. Not only does this keep production local, it means precious 'Greens' (the original sculpts, traditionally in 'green stuff' epoxy putty) can be taken to the mouldmaker in person. No risk of losing or damaging them in the post!
The studio is also currently the base of operations for storing, sorting, packing and posting stock. Creative solutions have been found to ensure there's still room for painting and playing games (just!) and that the madness of Oakbound doesn't spill out into the rest of the home... or, at least, not for very long! Fortunately, Geoff's wife is an artist and very understanding of the mess a creative passion can make!
